In Fall of my senior year at [University Located in State of Michigan] (2016), I took a class titled “Philosophy of Karl Marx” with Professor [Censored]. The focus of the class was looking at Karl Marx’s philosophies with an African American perspective. A few weeks into the class, before the midterm, a classmate told the class that I am a conservative and I work for the Michigan Republican Party.
It did not seem to bother my classmates much, however, my professor almost took it as an insult, even though I had never said one bad thing about liberals and was very quiet about my views. From that day on, I would try to say hi to professor as he walked into the classroom and he would say hi back to everyone but me. I brushed it off at first. I mostly noticed the bias against me when we got out midterms back. We had been given the essay questions the weekend before and my friend, who was in the class too, and I came up with answers together.
On our midterm, we wrote almost the exact same thing, however, when we got our grades back, my friend received a 4.0 and I received a 1.0. I confronted the professor about it during his office hours and he refused to change my grade and told me that I need to change my political views before he changes my grade.
I took it to his superior, the department head, and the ombudsman at the university and they all told me there “wasn’t enough proof” even when I compared the two essays (my friend’s and mine) and told them what the professor told me. They said to simply move on and that I would lose the fight and that it would most likely cause more harm to my grades.
I kept pursuing it and filed a complaint. At the end of the semester nothing had been done about my situation, but the professor knew I was still filing complaints, so he told me to drop them and he would give me a 3.0 in the class. I ended up dropping the complaint because I needed a good grade in the class to graduate on time. I have heard similar incidents from other students who had this same professor and some incidents about other professors at [University]. I am very disappointed in my school.
Raging Freedom classifies this as an act against conservatives of the highest degree due to the blatant bias, and will be submitting this to the relevant conservative groups.
